Here you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions about New Life Doulas

THE MOST COMMON QUESTIONS

What is a postpartum meal prep doula?

A postpartum meal prep doula combines specialized knowledge of 4th-trimester recovery nutrition with hands-in-the-kitchen support. Unlike standard private chefs or meal delivery services, our doulas prepare warm, nutrient-dense, and easy-to-digest meals specifically formulated to aid tissue repair, balance hormones, and support breast milk supply.

How does in-home meal prep work?

On your scheduled shift day, your doula comes directly to your home kitchen in Connecticut. They handle everything end-to-end: organizing ingredients, cooking customized meals for you and your family, packaging and labeling food in your fridge/freezer, and leaving your kitchen spotlessly clean.

Do I have to buy the groceries myself?

We offer three flexible options to fit your needs:

  1. Instacart Delivery: You order the ingredients online to arrive before your shift.

  2. Curbside Pickup: Your doula picks up your pre-ordered grocery order on their way over.

  3. Personal Shopping: Your doula handles all the grocery shopping for you from scratch (billed within total shift hours).

What kinds of meals do you prepare for postpartum recovery?

  • Our menus focus on traditional postpartum nutrition principles: warm, cooked, nutrient-dense foods that are gentle on digestion. This includes slow-simmered bone broths, hearty stews, galactagogue-rich lactation snacks (like oatmeal hemp bites), and mineral-rich meals tailored to your dietary needs (dairy-free, gluten-free, vegan, etc.).

Can you cook meals for my partner and older children too?

Yes! Our in-home cooking shifts are fully customizable to nourish your whole household, ensuring your partner and children have delicious, home-cooked meals while you rest with baby.

What areas in Connecticut do you serve?

We serve families throughout Fairfield County, New Haven County, Hartford County, and surrounding Connecticut areas. Contact us to verify coverage for your specific town or city.

What if my partner and I want to interview doulas first to find the right fit?

We believe chemistry and mutual comfort are essential. Through our Three-Step Matching Process, you meet with our founder, Rebecca, to outline your household dynamics and preferences. You then have the opportunity to speak with available doulas during a "Perfect Match Interview" before committing, ensuring you feel completely aligned with who enters your home.

Can a postpartum doula help if I'm bottle-feeding or having feeding struggles?

Yes, absolutely. New Life Doulas supports all feeding choices completely judgment-free. Our team is trained in lactation mechanics, proper bottle-feeding techniques, formula preparation, and pumping efficiency. Whether you choose exclusive breastfeeding, formula feeding, combo feeding, or pumping, your doula will troubleshoot positioning, bottle flow, and schedule optimization.

Will a postpartum doula help with meal prep and household chores?

Yes. While a doula is not a full deep-cleaning service, daytime support includes keeping the home peaceful and functional. Your doula will handle light housekeeping, kitchen tidying, baby laundry, nursery organization, and nourishing meal preparation so you can focus on rest and bonding.

How does a doula support C-section recovery or perinatal mental health?

  • Physical Recovery: A doula assists with mobility, body mechanics, comfortable nursing positions to protect incisional healing, and taking physical tasks off your shoulders.

  • Mental Health: Our doulas are trained to recognize early warning signs of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs), including postpartum depression and anxiety. We provide emotional validation, reduce mental load, and connect you with clinical resources if extra support is needed.

Do I need a postpartum doula if this isn't my first baby?

Many second-, third-, or fourth-time parents find doula support even more valuable. Adding a newborn to a house with older children changes the dynamic completely. A postpartum doula provides specialized sibling engagement—keeping older children nurtured, entertained, and smoothly integrated into the new routine so you can focus on healing and bonding with your new baby.

What does a postpartum doula actually do?

A postpartum doula provides comprehensive, non-judgmental physical, emotional, and practical support to your entire household during the "fourth trimester". Rather than focusing solely on the baby, a doula cares for the family as a whole. This includes birthing parent recovery, feeding and lactation support, hands-on newborn education, light housekeeping, meal preparation, nursery management, and sibling engagement.

What’s the difference between daytime and overnight postpartum support?

  • Daytime Support: Focuses on household harmony, parent education, and recovery. Your doula assists with infant care cues, light meal prep, nursery restocking, baby laundry, and older siblings while answering your daily parenting questions.

  • Overnight Support: Focuses on restorative sleep and quiet infant care. Your doula manages overnight feeding (bringing baby to you for nursing or handling bottle-feedings entirely), reflux care, sleep conditioning, and morning prep like sanitizing pump parts and bottles.

When should I book a postpartum doula, and how many hours do families typically need?

Because our doulas book out months in advance, we recommend booking during your second or early third trimester. However, we always do our best to accommodate last-minute or post-birth requests.

  • Shift Minimums: All shifts operate with a 4-hour minimum (day) and 10-hour minimum (night).

  • Typical Schedule: Most families start with 2 to 3 shifts per week during the first 4 weeks home. Many choose to increase hours when a partner returns to work or transition between daytime and overnight support as their needs evolve.

How much does a postpartum doula cost, and will insurance cover it?

  • Daytime Support: Focuses on household harmony, parent education, and recovery. Your doula assists with infant care cues, light meal prep, nursery restocking, baby laundry, and older siblings while answering your daily parenting questions.

  • Overnight Support: Focuses on restorative sleep and quiet infant care. Your doula manages overnight feeding (bringing baby to you for nursing or handling bottle-feedings entirely), reflux care, sleep conditioning, and morning prep like sanitizing pump parts and bottles.Rates vary depending on whether you are booking daytime care, overnight shifts, or specialized services like in-home meal prep. While traditional medical insurance does not typically pay doulas directly upfront, many families successfully use HSA/FSA funds or submit itemized superbills to private insurance for reimbursement under lactation and postpartum care benefits. We also offer gift registries so loved ones can contribute directly to your care.

How do I know I can trust who is coming into my home?

Inviting support into your home after birth requires total peace of mind. Every professional on the New Life Doulas team undergoes rigorous screening:

  • Trained and certified by accredited postpartum organizations

  • Current CPR & First Aid certified

  • Fully insured and comprehensive background check cleared

What services do New Life Doulas provide?

New Life Doulas offers comprehensive postpartum and in-home childcare services for growing families across Connecticut. Beyond specialized postpartum care—including newborn care aligned with AAP Safe Sleep Guidelines, lactation guidance, sleep consulting, meal preparation, sibling adjustment, and light household help—we also provide flexible in-home childcare for newborns and children up to age 12.

Whether you need date-night sitters, after-school care, transportation assistance, or specialized infant support from DONA-trained postpartum doulas, all team members are fully background-checked, American Heart Association CPR-certified, and insured according to Connecticut early childhood care standards.

How does working with a doula agency like New Life Doula's work?

Working through an agency allows you to connect with multiple vetted doulas and babysitters to find the ideal match for your family's personality and specific needs. If your primary daytime doula, nighttime doulas, or babysitter ever experiences an emergency or illness, the agency model ensures seamless backup coverage without sacrificing quality of care.

How do I find a trusted babysitter near me in Connecticut?

Finding reliable, high-quality in-home childcare is effortless when working with an established agency like New Life Childcare Services. Rather than vetting independent candidates yourself, our team handles all screening, matching, and management.

Every caregiver on our team undergoes a full background screening, holds active CPR and First-Aid certification, provides verified references, and brings a minimum of three years of experience or certified babysitter training. Whether you need one-time date night coverage, recurring after-school help, transportation, or specialized sick care when your child cannot attend school, our simple online booking system matches you with a trusted local caregiver.

Should I pay a premium for an experienced caregiver?

Investing in an experienced caregiver—such as our Tier 2, Tier 3, or Tier 4 providers—is often the best choice for family peace of mind and complex routine management:

  • Infants & Newborns: Caring for infants under six months requires specialized knowledge of safe sleep, lactation, and developmental milestones. Premium care ensures your infant is in the hands of an expert trained in fourth-trimester health.

  • Schedule & Logistics: Experienced sitters excel at managing full family schedules, providing safe transportation to schools and activities, assisting with homework, and handling unexpected disruptions smoothly.

  • Specialized Development & Sick Care: Advanced caregivers can actively support developmental milestones, manage sleep transitions, and provide comforting sick care when your child must stay home from daycare or school.

For casual supervision of older children during a date night, an entry-level caregiver is a wonderful choice. For complex routines or infant care, paying for experience brings unmatched confidence.

How do I know if a New Life Doulas babysitter is trustworthy?

At New Life Doulas, every caregiver on our team must meet stringent standards before they are ever placed in your home:

  • Rigorous Screening: All caregivers complete a full background check, hold verified CPR and First-Aid certifications, and provide verified professional references speaking directly to their reliability and skill.

  • Doula-Backed Standards: Our babysitters share the exact same high standards of professionalism, compassion, and safety that parents have trusted from our core New Life Doula services for years.

  • Proactive Communication & Alignment: Before care begins, parents receive a short personal bio for their assigned sitter, making it easy to get to know their caregiving style, experience, and background before they step through the front door.

Why Should I Hire a Babysitter Through New Life Doulas Instead of on My Own?

Hiring a babysitter independently through online job boards or social media requires you to take on the full responsibility of an employer and recruiter—from screening candidate backgrounds to managing scheduling conflicts. Booking through New Life Childcare Services eliminates the risk, stress, and time commitment of searching on your own.

    • Agency-Vetted Safety & Expertise: Every caregiver on our team is thoroughly background-checked, reference-verified, and CPR and First-Aid certified. Because our childcare service is backed by the high standards of New Life Doulas, our sitters bring an elevated level of professionalism, developmental knowledge, and compassionate care to your home.

    • Reliable Backup Coverage: If an independent sitter gets sick or has an emergency at the last minute, you are left scrambling. With New Life, you have an established local network backing your family, ensuring seamless support when you need it most.

    • Tailored Care for Every Stage: Instead of guessing a candidate's skill level, our structured tier system allows you to match your exact needs—whether that is high-energy companion care for an older child, transportation to activities, specialized sick care, or expert Postpartum Doula support for a newborn under six months.

    • Access to a Local Healthcare Network: Beyond childcare, our team is deeply connected to Connecticut family wellness networks. When you work with us, you gain direct access to trusted local referrals for pediatricians, specialists, and pelvic floor therapists whenever your family needs extra support.

What do infant care classes cover?

Our infant care classes cover the essentials of caring for a baby from birth to 6 months. This includes feeding, swaddling, diapering, calming a crying baby, and setting up a safe sleep space.

How long are infant care classes?

Most classes run about 60–90 minutes, depending on the format and topics covered.

Are infant care classes only for first-time parents?

No. Our classes are helpful for first-time parents, parents returning to the "infant scene" after a break, and adoptive parents too.

What's the difference between the group class and the private class?

The group class is held in person at our Hamden studio alongside other new and expecting parents. The private class is one-on-one, held in your home (or virtually), and lets us work directly with your actual nursery and sleep setup.

Can grandparents or caregivers attend infant care classes?

Yes. Our private in-home class welcomes up to 10 adults, including grandparents, partners, or any regular caregiver.

Do I need to take an infant care class before my baby is born?

Not necessarily. You can take our infant care classes during pregnancy or shortly after your baby arrives, whichever timing works best for you.

What exactly is included in a Nursery Setup & Postpartum Prep package?

Your package includes complete nursery setup with ergonomic "easy-reach" stations for diapering, changing, and soothing; feeding and nursing station creation; breast pump assembly and equipment setup; sanitizing and organizing of baby gear, clothing, and linens; and expert consultation on your baby registry to help you choose practical essentials over clutter.

Who will I be working with?

You'll receive direct, hands-on guidance from New Life Doulas' experienced leadership team, including our founder. This isn't outsourced to a rotating cast of assistants — you get dedicated attention from people who have spent years helping Connecticut families prepare for newborns.

How do I prepare for Nursery Setup Day?

We'll provide you with a List of Items to Have for Set-Up Day — a simple checklist covering the organizers, bins, and basics we'll need on hand. Having these ready in advance helps us make the most of our time together and get everything done efficiently
